Efficacy of insecticide mixtures for the protection of maize in storage

Field trials were carried out on three mixtures of insecticides, 1.) pirimiphos methyl (4.0 mg/kg) + permethrin (0.5 mg/kg) + piperonyl butoxide (10 mg/kg), 2.) pirimiphos methyl (4.0 mg/kg) + deltamethrin (0.1 mg/kg) + piperonyl butoxide (10 mg/kg) and 3.)fenitrothion (6.0 mg/kg) + fenvalerate (0.5 mg//kg) + piperonyl butoxide (10 mg/kg). Treatments were applied by admixture as the grain moved in a mobile conveyor on the premises of the Tumauini Cooperative Federated in Isabela Province [Philippines]. Following treatment, the grain was bagged and stored at the federation's warehouse. Grain moisture content was 13 percent. Efficacy was measured by challenging with insects samples of treated grain taken at 1.5-month interval throughout storage. In addition, the insect population, percent insect damage grain and percent weight loss were estimated on each sampling occasion and at the completion of storage. Bioassays on samples of treated maize collected at 6 weeks interval revealed that all mixtures were effective against the lesser grain borer, Rhizopertha dominica and the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais. All mixtures significantly reduced dry weight loss by about 98 percent, protected the grain from insect infestation for 4.5 months
