Production and utilization of Trichogramma evanescens for corn borer control in Region 1 [Bacnotan, La Union, (Philippines)]

Asiatic corn borer (ACB) is recognized as one of the major pests of corn in the country. The crop can be totally wiped out if heavily infested with ACB. Several control measures such as use of insecticides, bagging of corn ears, and use of parasitoids. In Region 1, there were 44 municipalities covering an area of 36,000 ha, usually planted to corn in September after harvesting rice. The use of Trichogramma evanescens was introduced in Mangaldan, Basista, and Urbiztondo in Pangasinan to test its efficiency against ACB. About 50,500 trichocards were produced and released to 721 ha of corn benefiting 721 farmers. Finding showed that about 81-86 percent parasitism were obtained in the three technology demonstration sites. Corn applied with Trichogramma harbored plenty of parasites and predators. Minimal damage caused by ACB was observed in the Trichogramma-treated areas. The safest and most effective application was observed when 50 trichocards were applied at 21 days after emergence followed by 20 trichocards a week later. Higher yields were obtained. More farmers shifted to the application of trichogramma in their corn fields
