Fisheries production and the El Nino phenomenon

The fishery statistics presented from 1980 to the first semester of 1998 provided sufficient basis for assessing the effects of the three major El Nino episodes which hit the country. The different fishery sectors responded quite differently to the El Nino phenomenon and in varying degrees. Commercial fishing seemed to be the fishery sector least affected as its fish production showed a generally increasing trend. Marine municipal fishing is favored at the onset of the El Nino episodes because of good weather condition which provided the fishermen more fishing days. On the other hand, inland municipal fishing has been greatly affected because of the reduced water levels in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and other inland waters. Total aquaculture production exhibited a generally increasing trend as increases in mariculture, particularly in seaweeds, offset the decreases in the ponds, especially in brackishwater fishponds, where the major species, bangos and sugpo, exhibited sensitivity to the changes in temperature and to higher salinity of the water. The regional production statistics for the first and second quarters of the current year showed that the effect of El Nino on fisheries is nationwide in nature and not localized in some regions
