Inventory/assessment of the natural stock of seaweeds in Camiguin [Philippines]

The natural stocks of macrobenthic algae on the littoral zone of Camiguin Island [Philippines] were identified in the littoral zone of Caminguin broken down into 9 green algae (Chlorophyta), 7 brown algae (Phaeophyta) and 20 red algae (Rhodophyta). Mantigue Island (STN A) had the highest number of species accounting for 88.8 percent of the total species recorded in the island. Cantaan cove (STN B) had 69.44 percent of the total species recorded while Benoni Lagoon had the lowest number of species accounting for 16.66 percent of the total species recorded. The highest percent cover and relative abundance were contributed by the red algae represented by Laurencia sp. 2, followed by brown and green algae represented by Codium sp. and Caulerpa racemosa, respectively. The highest seaweed biomass was contributed by the red algae represented by Laurencia sp. 2, and Gelidiella acerosa which had a mean biomass of 19.13 g/dry weight/sq m. Major seaweed species such as Hypnea sp., Codium ssp., Gracilaria acerosa and C. racemosa were observed to be exploited in large quantities. Undue stress on the algae was also noted because of the daily fishing activities of the coastal inhabitants. The assessment showed that the littoral zone of Camiguin Island is rich in algal species and has potentials for seaweed research and commercial seaweed production
