Efficiency of nodal cutting on rooting of Aglaonema

Aglaonema cultivars were screened to assess their rooting ability using shoot tip and nodal stem cuttings. Tip cuttings achieved extensive root system 2 to 4 weeks earlier than nodal cuttings. However, more plants were produced from nodal cuttings (5 to 10 per plant). Shoot tip and 3-node cuttings attained 100 percent rooting even without auxin treatment, while 75-92 percent rooting for 2-node cuttings. One-node cuttings on the other hand, needed 50 ppm IBA to attain high percent rooting. Placing these cuttings in a horizontal planting position doubled percent rooting. The rooting performance of half-stem (2-node cuttings divided vertically into two) was also explored using 5 different cultivars of Aglaonema. Positive response (resulted in 95 percent rooting) was observed when treated with 50 ppm IBA for 15 minutes. This method resulted in better rooting as compared to one-node cuttings. Suitable non-soil rooting media were a mixture of one part sand and one part coconut coir dust and a mixture of one part sawdust and one part burnt rice hull for rooting of tips and nodal cuttings. The present study points to the possibility of mass propagating Aglaonema using the least number of nodes available
