A dibbler type fertilizer applicator has been designed and demonstrated to the farmers by the National Tobacco Administration with the objective of reducing the cost of fertilizer application and at the same time, applying the right amount of fertilizer into the plant. The applicator is made of locally available materials and can easily be fabricated in the local shops by unskilled workers. It is easy to operate and maintain and does not require sophisticated support facilities. The dibbler is effective in delivering the right amount of fertilizer aside from a substantial savings in the cost of labor. It can also be used as a planter for corn, mungbean, cowpea, peanut, and other crops. The machine has a life span of five years or more and has marginal efficiency of capital of 180% compared with the rate of interest on loans of 18-20%. The manufacturing and marketing of the dibbler is going on with the support of the National Tobacco Administration, Department of Agriculture, and the Provincial Governments of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur [Philippines]
