PLACES [Protected Landscapes and Corridor Establishment Scheme]: a geographical-landscape ecological approach to biodiversity conservation planning

A method of identifying potential biodiversity conservation areas was devised and tested in a study area in the Southeastern Luzon peninsula, Philippines. The methodology called the Protected Landscapes and Corridor Establishment Scheme or PLACES, utilized a Geographical Information System for the storage, analysis and display of spatial data. Thematic data layers such as land use, vegetation, geology, slope, altitude, land tenture, keystone wildlife ranges, streams and roads were digitized and combined in order to establish the location of significant conservation estates and natural ecosystems. Spatial analysis was done in terms of geoecological aspects, ecosystems diversity, naturalness and administrative feasibility criteria with the establishment of a continuous network of protected landscapes and nature corridors as the paramont goal. An aerial reconnaisance, ground truthing and survey of key informants were conducted in the study area to verify the actual conservation values and status of candidate areas
