Carbon dioxide sequestration potential of a multistorey agroforestry system in Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve [College, Laguna Philippines]

One of the most alarming issues today is climate change brought about by the increasing concentration of the greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. This study was conducted in order to quatitatively assess the capacity of a multistorey agroforestry system in Mt. Makiling to store and sequester CO2. The methodology used to attain the objectives included the measurement of the total above-ground biomass, ground biomass and below-ground biomass of the stand. All plant tissues were brought to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) [Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] Laboratory to analyze the total carbon content of each including soil carbon content. Annual litterfall production of the stand was also estimated including its carbon storage. Results of this study showed that total biomass accumulation of multistorey agroforestry system was 236.22 tons/hectare. This was obtained from the biomass measured from the woods and leaves of Gmelina arborea and Theobroma cacao, understorey vegetation, ground litter and roots of the stand. The total carbon storage of the biomass was 105.24 tons/hectare. And the annual litterfall production of this stand was 5.04 tons/hectare which has a capacity of storing 2.2 carbon tons/hectare/year. The results showed that yemane and cacao multistorey agroforestry system could be a possible sink of CO2 and has a good potential of mitigating climate change
