Breeding Holstein cattle in the Czech Republic

Until recently, the cattle bred in the Czech Republic was predominantly the dual purpose Bohemian Spotted breed for the production of milk and slaughter cattle. Recently, the breeding of Black Pied cattle has increased, mostly based on import, purchase of embryos and semen, and grading up. In the past 20 years the population of BP cattle was influenced by the Holstein breed. At the present time the proportion of BP cattle is nearly one half of the total cattle population. The proportion of Holstein cattle in the population of the BP breed is 37 percent now. In cattle efficiency tests the average production of proteins of Holstein cows per one standard lactation was 181 kg. The average production in the best 10 herds was 289-330 kg of proteins per one cow per standard lactation. Milk production of the most efficient cow in the cattle efficiency test in 1997 was 16.106 kg of milk, milk with 4.65 percent fat and 3.20 percent proteins, during the 305 days of lactation. The main selection criterion in the breeding programme is the relative breeding value for kg of proteins
