[Influence of eucalyptus plantation installation and management techniques on the diversity of undergrowth]

The aim of this study was the evaluation of the consequences of different techniques of soil mobilisation and management of harvesting debris on the biodiversity of understory vegetation in plantations of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. The experiment consisted of 6 treatments in a replanted area and 4 treatments in a coppice area with 5 replicates, under a randomised blocks design. The vegetation survey was performed in spring of 3 consecutive years by the square method. The species richness after 3 years was highest in the treatment with removal of slash and without soil mobilisation in the replanted area and with incorporation of slash in the topsoil by harrowing in the coppice area. Species diversity (Shannon-Wiener index) at the beginning of the experiment was highest with the incorporation of slash at the topsoil in the replanted area and with removal of debris and no soil mobilisation in the coppice area. However, after 3 years species diversity was highest with the broadcast of non woody slash at the soil surface (replanted area) and with the incorporation of debris in the topsoil (coppice area), suggesting a significant contribution of harvesting debris to biodiversity of understory vegetation. Some differences between treatmentsincreased with time along the experiment period, suggesting that the study must be kept during the stand life

O objectivo do presente estudo consistiu na avaliacao dos efeitos de diferentes tecnicas de mobilizacao do solo e maneio dos resioduos de abate sobre a diversidade de especies da vegetacao sob coberto de eucaliptal (Eucalyptus globulus Labill.). O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com seis tratamentos em area replantada e quatro em talhadia, com cinco repeticoes. A inventariacao da vegetacao efectuou-se na Primavera, em tres anos concecutivos, pelo metodo do quadrado. Os resultados obtidos indicaram maior riqueza especifica com remocao dos residuos e sem mobilizacao do solo, excepto na talhadia, onde a incorporacao dos residuos por gradagem conduziu ao maior numero de especies ao fim de tres anos. A diversidade de especies (indice de Shannon-Wiener) foi mais elevada, de inicio, com incorporacao dos residuos por gradagem, na area replantada, ou com remocao destes e sem mobilizacao, na talhadia, mas passados 3 anos a diversidade tornou-se mais elevada com distribuicao de residuos nao lenhosos a superficie (area replantada) e com incorporacao por gradagem (talhadia), sugerindo que a manutencao dos residuos de abate pode estimular a diversidade biologica sob coberto. Algumas diferencas entre tratamentos acentuaram-se com o tempo decorrido desde a instalacao do ensaio, justificando o prosseguimento do estudo ao longo do desenvolvimento do povoamento
