Agricultural utilization of sewage and eutrophication pressure of waters

Putrified sewage of Lublin is the source of about 1300 t of nitrogen and about 180 t of phosphorus yearly. Because of that the main aim of the investigations was to determine the reduction of phosphorus and nitrogen input into the waters by the use of sewage for watering of industrial crops. Studies were localized on organic soils on which single and double doses of sewage were applied. The test plants were: poplar Populus nigra, willow Salix americana, corn Zea mays, hemp Cannabis sativa, spring rape Brassica napus and two grass mixtures. Surface irrigation with sewage of industrial crops cultivated on organic peat-muck soils caused the decrease of phosphorus concentration by about 90 percent and nitrogen by about 60-70 percent
