Field experiments were carried out in 1997-99 at Jelcz-Laskowice Experimental Station to test three tillage systems: traditional, simplified and zero. Soil samples taken from 0-20 and 20-30 cm depths twice in growing season were analysed for soil respiration capacity, numbers of bacteria, actinomyces and fungi. Tested parameters were different for particular tillage systems. The number of all microorganisms was the least at direct sowing, while at simplified tillage the highest number of actinomyces and most intensive microbial development were observed. At traditional tillage soil respiration capacity and total number of bacteria were slightly higher than in other treatments
