Four breeds of sheep are in program for conservation in Slovenia: the dairy breeds Bovec Sheep and Istrian Zackel Sheep, and the meat breeds Jezersko-Solcava Sheep and Bela Krajina Zackel Sheep. All the breeds in the program are bred in autochthonous environment. The breeds are well adapted to specific environments and are also subject to selection. Standard relevant traits are recorded and monitored for the purpose of selection. Lately, molecular genetics methods are being introduced, enabling identification of genotypes on DNA level, independently of sex or environmental effects.
