2000
Kosinski, Z. | Tryjanowski, P. (Adam Mickiewicz University. Poznan (Poland). Institute of Environmental Biology)
The aim of the study was to detect patterns of habitat use of seed-eating birds (Tree Sparrow, Chaffinch, Hawfinch, Serin, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Linnet , Corn Bunting, Yellowhammer, Ortolan Bunting and Reed Bunting) in Polish farmland and to provide recommendations to halt and reverse the present decline in breeding populations of seed-eating passerines. The study was carried out in Wielkopolska region (Western Poland) during 1994. Birds were counted by using the combined mapping technique. Seven vegetation and habitat variables were used in more detailed analyses (Principal Components Analysis). On the study plots eleven granivorous species account total density 28.1 pairs per square km. The results show that differences in the whole bird communities as well as in selected species in agricultural landscape may be explained by 1-2 of variables (components) characterising the spatial structure of the landscape. Margin habitats play a decisive role in the shaping of bird communities in agricultural landscape
