The main principles, presents stage and prognosis of soil monitoring system in Slovakia are described in this contribution. There are monitored the most important soil properties concerning the soil acidification and alkalisation, available nutrients and humus content development soil compaction and erosion as well as soil contamination in this system. On the basis of achieved results more or less significant changes have been registered (decrease of available phosphorus and potassium content, slight decrease of humus content in some arable soils, increase of areas with compacted and eroded soils) since 1993 year
