Effects of environmental pollutants on fish and shellfish culture important to the economy of Thailand

Five hundred and forty giant black tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon), average weight of 15 gm were exposed by static method to Methylparathion (MP) at concentrations of 1, 2 and 3 PPB for 96 hrs in 15 percent salinity, temperature 27-29 deg C and pH at 7.5 of water. The results showed that. 1. The serum protein was detected to be 4.72, 4.41, 5.90 and 6.11 gm percent in control and 1, 2 and 3 PPB MP group respectively. The protein band showed high molecular weight. 2. The amount of muscle cholinesterase showed no statistically significant difference among all 4 groups and this enzyme activity in nervous tissue did not vary with the concentration of MP exposed. 3. The light and electron microscopic examination of nervous tissue muscle and hemocytes showed inflammatory reaction varied with the concentration of MP. The hemocytic granule was recognizable found in hemocyte by electron microscopic study. 4. The SGOT, SGPT, BUN Creatinine, Alkaline phosphatase, Glucose, Total protein, Calcium and Phosphorus were examined, only SGOT and Creatinine were statistically significant different from the control group. 5. The chemotaxis and Phagocytic activity of hemocyte were reduced upon the increased concentrations of MP. This indicated that MP could depress the cellular immune system of P. monodon.
