Seasonal abundance of Leucopholis sp. nr. armata Sharp (Coleoptera: Scarabaeiidae), a pest of sugarcane in South Kalimantan

Seasonal abundance of white grub, Leucopholis sp. nr. armata Sharp (Coleoptera : Scarabaeidae) and its natural enemies were studied in large commercial sugarcane fields at Pelaihari Sugar Plantation, South Kalimantan, between March 1989 and May 1991. Biweekly samples of the grub population in the top 50 cm of the soil indicate that L. sp. nr. armata had a life cycle of about one year. The beetles began emerging from the ground at dusk in mid-September coinciding with the beginning of monsoon and reached its peak in October. Young larvae appeared between September and February. Third-instar larvae, the most harmful stage, were abundant between November and March but very scarce between August and October. The grub entered the pupal stage between June and August and October. Two species of natural enemies of the grub were found in the samples, viz. Campsomeris spp. (Hymenoptera: Scoliidae) and an unidentified fungal pathogen. Their population was, however, very scarce and sporadic throughout the study period.
