Pig waste treatment using the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor

This study was carried out to assess the feasibility and efficiency in the treatment of swine waste of a laboratory scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. Four 6.72 -litre UASB reactors, each of 0.10 m diameter and 1.0 m height were employed. The reactors were used to treat influent of about 3,000 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD) per litre at ambient temperature. Two reactors were fed continuously with influent from pig wastewater which was kept in the 4 deg C refrigerator, while other two reactors were also fed continuously with influent which was kept at room temperature. All four reactors were seeded with acclimatized sludge from pig farms. Initial concentration of seed sludge was 10.7 kg VSS/cubic m reactor. All reactors were operated with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 72, 48, 24 and 12 hr, corresponding to organic loading rate (OLR) of 0.74, 1.34, 2.78 and 5.87 kg COD/cubic m d respectively. Over 90 percent COD removal was achieved within 24-72 hr. Total gas production rate was found to be between 182-220 l/kg COD added (at STP) and the percentage of methane content was 60 percent (v/v). The scanning electron micrograph showed that sludge granules were full of filamentous bacteria. The result indicated that the upflow snaerobic aludge blanket reactor could effectively treat pig wastewater.
