Use of vetiver grass for soil and water conservation in Northern Thailand

Between 1992 and 1994, a series of trials were conducted to define the methodologies of Vetiver grass propagation and use for soil and water conservation aspects in Northern Thailand. Vetiver grass propagation in polybags with root submergence, either with water or humic acid solution resulted in better growth. However, root submergence with humic acid solution did not give superior effect than with water. The bag size of 3 * 6 inches has shown to be very appropriate for this purpose. The polybags should be kept under 50 percent daylight during the first month and turned to direct sunlight afterwards. The use of Vetiver grass as vegetative barriers showed higher reduction in soil loss and surface runoff than others. One row of Vetiver contour planting with 1 metre verical interval was found to be suitable for areas of not more than 25 percent slope. However, all procedures used in experiments gave much reduction in crop yield. better cropping patterns associated with appropriate land management should be introduced in order to retain soil productivity.
