Path-coefficient analysis on yield and yield components of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.)_

Correlation and path-coefficient were analyzed on yield and yield components of 8 varieties of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.), cultivated in cool season of 1993 and summer season of 1994 by RCBD. The results showed the interaction of variety and season on fresh fruit weight per plant, dry fruit weight per plant, mean fruit weight, fruit width, fruit length, plant height at the age of 90 days, plant width and the number of primary branches at the age of 120 days. Almost all correlation coefficient on yield and yield components of the 2 seasons showed the homogeneity except correlation between days to 50 percent flowering and fresh fruit weight per plant, dry fruit weight per plant, the number of fruits per plant and correlation between plant width and the number of nodes, plant height at the age of 120 days. The pooled correlation coefficient was found that fresh fruit weight per plant were positively correlated with dry fruit weight per plant, mean fruit weight, the number of fruits per plant, fruit width and plant width at the age of 120 days. Path-coefficient analysis indicated that the number of fruits per plant, mean fruit weight and fruit width had the best correlation with fresh fruit weight per plant. The number of furits per plant and mean fruit weight had direct effect on fresh fruit weight per plant while the number of seeds per fruit and fruit width had direct effect on mean fruit weight. Mean fruit weight, the number of fruits per plant, and combine of fruit length, fruit width and the number of seeds per plant were recommened characters for the selection to improve fresh fruit yield.
