Young leaf removal at three different reproductive stages affect rate and duration of seed filling of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill)

Young leaf removal (YLR) to reduce the competition between vegetative and reproductive growth may affect seed growth rate (SGR) and effective seed filling period (EFP) of soybean. An experiment was conducted at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center, Packchong district, Nakhon Ratchasima province during the late rainy (LR) (September-December, 1992) and dry (D) (January-April, 1993) seasons, employing a split plot arrangement in RCB and replicated 4 times. The main plots were 6 soybean cultivars; NW.1, SJ.4, CM.60, SK.1, SJ.5 and KUSL 20004 and the sub plots were young leaf removal at three different reproductive stages; R1, R3, R5 and no defoliation (control). YLR at R1, R3 and R5 in both seasons affected SGR, EFP, grain yield, yield components, LAI and HI. The greatest SGR of 8.60 (LR) and 8.50 (D) mgd/seed/d and the shortest EFP at 15.11 (LR) and 16.70 (D) days were obtained from no defoliation. YLR at R5 had lowest SGR of 8.20 (LR) and 6.90 (D) mg/seed/d. YLR at R3 has the longest EFP at 17.34 (LR) and 19.19 (D) days. YLR at R3 has the tendency of producing higher 100 seed weight of 15.89 (LR) and 15.41 (D) g, pod per plant of 27.65 (LR) and 28.45 (D) pods and grain yield of 190.97 (LR) and 197.49 (D) kg/rai.
