Basal stem rot disease of sweet corn

New disease of sweet corn has been found in Prathumtani province in 1993. It devastated more than 200 rais of sweet corn and caused 100 percent yield loss. Etiology, symptomolopy and chemical control have been conducted. The casual organism was identified as Marasmiellus sp. This is a new incident of corn disease in Thailand. Fifteen fungicides have been evaluated in laboratory at concentrations of 25, 50, 100, 500, 1,000 and 1,500 ppm, respectively. The result revealed that benomyl 50 percent WP, thiabendazole 40 percent WP, carbendazim 50 percent EC, carboxin 75 percent WP and flusilazol 40 percent EC gave the most effective in controlling Marasmiellus in vitro. Post and pre-emergence corns have been inoculated with Marasmiellius and tested with these five fungicides in the greenhouse under artificial inoculation. The results showed that applying fungicides before planting seeds gave better results than applying after planting. Benomyl 50 percent WP and carbendazim 50 percent EC gave the best control with disease incidence at harvested time is about 17 percent.
