Agronomic performance of four Sesbania species as affected by phosphorus fertilizer and their influence yield of irrigated transplanted rice on an acid sulphate soil

Agronomic performance of four leguminous green manure species Sesbania rostrata, S.aculeata, S.chizea, and S.china were evaluated as pre rice green manure on an acid sulphate soil. Phosphorus (triple superphosphate) was basally applied at the rate of 0, 50, and 100 kilograms per hectare respectively to determine its effect on the growth and development of these Sesbania. The rice variety RD-23 was transplanted one week after incorporation of green manure. Nitrogen fertilizer was topdressed at the rate of 0, 20, 40, and 80 kilograms per hectare to determine the response of rice crop to added inorganic N fertilizer. The results show that all the species of green manure were photosensitive and flowered 35 days after emergence. Significant differences were observed on some agronomic characteristics. With added P, the plants were taller, more nodules were produced, and higher biomass was obtained than from the control. No significant differences was obtained in any parameter as the rate of application of P was increased from 50 to 100 kilograms per hectare. Biomass production was greatly affected by date of planting of green manure. Green manure planted in March has a higher biomass produced than those planted in November, and their N accumulation in all the species was high. With added inorganic N, the grain yield, the weight of 1,000 grains, tiller number and straw yield were increased. This relationship was found to be linear as the rate of applied N is increased. The grain yield, the straw yield, and the plant heights were significantly higher with 80 kg of N applied. The N and P uptake increased in both the rice grain and the straw with increased levels of applied P and N. However, higher N and P uptake was observed in the grain than in the straw.
