Rayong 5: New cassava cultivar

Rayong 5 is a newly recommended cassava cultivar which high in yield and starch content. It was derived from the cross between high yield female parent, 27-77-10 and high starch male parent, Rayong 3. Hybridization and selection had been done at Rayong Field Crops Research Center since 1982. Yield testings were conducted in 14 provinces during 1985 till 1993. The results from 120 trials indicated that Rayong 5 outyielded other recommended cultivars. It outyielded Rayong 1, the most widely grown cultivar, by 23 percent in fresh yield, 44 percent in starch yield and 32 percent in dry root yield. In addition to high yields, Rayong 5 is outstanding in germination and survival. Rayong 5 was registered by the Department of Agriculture on the 28th October 1994 and recommended for industrial uses.
