Baby corn standard yield trial in 1990

Baby Corn Standard Yield Trials (BSYT) were carried out in order to evaluate baby corn promising varieties with the standard varieties in many agronomic characteristics and yield aspects such as number of ears per plant, maturity, uniformity of baby corn ears as well as yield of standard baby corn ears. Randomized Complete Block Design was employed with 8 treatments and 4 replications at 2 locations: Chiang Mai Field Crops Research Center and Srisumrong Field Crop Experiment Station in 1990 rainy season. Plot size was 6.25*1.5 square m, planted 2 seed/hill within 2 rows, using 75 cm distance between rows and 25 cm distance between hills. 50 kg/rai of 15-15-15 fertilizer was applied before planting and a 25 kg/rai of urea was top-dressed after 20 day emergence. 600 cc of alachlor was prayed after planting. According to the poor germination of CMB 8704 F4, variety: Suwan 2 was then used as standard check instead. Baby corn hybrid CMB 9001 F1 was the best in uniformity of ears and weight of ears with husk, weight of ears without husk as well as weight of standard ears average from the 2 locations by 910, 140 and 78 kg/rai. For the open-pollinated variety: CMB 8704 (FS) C1 F1 was the runner up. It produced 802, 138 and 63 kg/rai compared to 762, 104 and 49 kg/rai of Suwan 2, respectively. Moreover, the best hybrid CMB 9001 F1 had 74 percent of standard ears when compared to 62 percent of Suwan 2. The seed of CMB 9001 will be multiplied and tested in the Baby Corn Regional Yield Trial and farmer Trial before release for farmers.
