Present paper describes the karyotype and the number of chromosomes in the specimens of spotted knife fish, Notopterus chitala (Hamilton) and knife fish, N. notopterus (Pallas), collected from Nan River. The chopping method was applied to prepare chromosome specimens from gill tissues by injecting colchicine in advance. The diploid number of N. chitala and N. notopterus were both 42, consisting of 21 acrocentric or telocentric chromosomes with arm number=42.
