Preliminary report on Meiofauna community in shrimp culture pond at Khung Kraben bay, Chanthaburi

Meiofauna community in shrimp cultured pond and adjacent area at Khung Kraben Bay, Chanthaburi, have been studied since May, 1992. This preliminary study covers one cycle of shrimp culture activity, from May to November, 1992. Sediment sample were collected monthly from 6 sampling points, namely, station fixed in in-out water canal in front of the culture area stations 2-5 fixed in 2 shrimp culture ponds, and station 6 fixed in wasted water treatment pond. The highest densities of meiofauna, ranging from 8,011 to 13,383 ind/10 square cm, were observed at station 1 situated outside of the shrimp ponds and the lowest densities, ranging from 61 to 2,417 ind/10 square cm, were observed at stations situated inside the shrimp culture ponds increases in meiofauna density were observed during shrimp culture period at stations 2 and 3 situated in a pond having successful shrimp culture whereas decreases in faunal density were observed at stations 4 and 5 situated in a pond having failure in shrimp culture. In terms of number, free living nematodes were most dominant. Copepods, rotifer and nauplii of crustacean appeared in large numbers at some sampling times. The study should be continued and more informations should be collected to clarify the community pattern in the shrimp culture pond and relevant environmental factors.
