Study on the development of stomach and first feeding of drumfish, Boesemania microlepis (Bleeker)

Survival rate of drumfish larvae (Boesemania microlepis (Bleeker)) fed on rotifer and Moina sp. at the age of 1-20 days was 14.67 percent. Nursing of drumfish larvae from 20-60 days old with adult Artemia showed the survival rate of 96.18 percent. The relationship between weight (W) and total length (L) of fish from 1-60 days can be expressed as W=0.000068L*[2.45); and the correlation coefficient (r*[2)) was 0.99. The relation of Age (t)-total length (L) and Age-weight (W) were L=2.5596e*[0.058t); r*[2)=0.93 and W=0.0018e*[0.12t); r*[2)=0.93 respectively. The study on the relation of fish mouth size of prey revealed that Moina sp. and Artemia have the appropriate size as food for fish larvae. The results of the study show that the food size for fish larvae was 20-50 percent of the mouth size and relationship of food size (FS) and mouth size (MS) was FS=0.10+0.37 MS; r*[2)=0.87. Eggs of drumfish is the buoyant type with a diameter of 1+-0.25 mm. Hatching of eggs will start 18 hours 30 minutes in water of 25-27 deg C. Transformation from newly hatch into juvenile stage took about 30 days after hatching. The morphological development of the stomach was complete at the ages of 19 days or 9.7 mm TL. Gastric gland can be detected at day 16 and all the fish specimens present the gastric gland at day 20 or 8 mm TL.
