Genetic basis of oviposition preference in bean weevil (Acanthoscelides obtectus)

In this study we investigated the relative contribution of diffferent types of activities of the genes determining the oviposition preference of females to differentiation of the two populations of the bean weevil (Acanthoscelides obtectus). These populations are maintained in the laboratory for 58 generations on the common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and chickpeas (Cicer arietinum). In order to achieve this goal a series of crosses between parental populations and population derivatives were performed. By using the joint-scaling test we revealed that the model best explaining the observed data includes additive, dominance, additive x additive and additive x dominance epistatic interactions between genes. In addition, it has been shown that the epistatic components of genetic variance increase when the beetles developed on the chickpea seeds, a novel host plant species for the bean weevils. Since there is an indication that the additive component of the genetic variance also changes with the change of the environment, the present study suggests that different components of genetic variation are not fixed entities that can be considered isolated from one another. These results from interpopulation crosses are consistent with the novel theoretical predictions concerning the relationship among different components of genetic variance.
