Occurrence of pests in small grains and their control [Yugoslavia]

Of several scores of harmful pests which are regularly encountered in small grains in Yugoslavia, corn ground beetle (Zabrus tenebrioides), cereal leaf beetle (Lema melanopus) and a group of harmful rodents (Microtus arvalis, Arvicola terrestris, Apodemus spp., Cricetus cricetus) have been economically important in recent years. Over last 15 years, chemical measures of controlling these pests were regularly applied in order to prevent extensive damage in small grains yields. On average for last 12 years (1986-1998), corn ground beetle, cereal leaf beetle and harmful rodents were controlled at 2.4, 10.2 and 29.4% of the wheat fields, respectively. It should be mentioned for the sake of comparison that in 1997/1998, the respective acreages treated against corn ground beetle, cereal leaf beetle and harmful rodents were about 1, 2.5 and 35.5%. Besides the species mentioned above, more intensive occurrence of the Senn pest, aphids and cockchafers have been sporadically registered.
