The experiments were conducted on the experimental field of Institute for Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia (Yugoslavia) during the 1997-1999 period. There were three sunflower hybrids and 8 sowing dates, from 20th of March each 10 days. Late sowing decreased percentages of harvested plants relative to seedling number. Less then 70% of harvested plants were obtained by sowing after May 1. Because of that yield of dates with higher missing of harvested plants would be favourable and we decided in calculating yield per hectare don't use number of harvested plants but only harvested area. Year and hybrids significantly affected on all traits. Sowing dates had the highest and the most regular effect. The highest seed and oil yield obtained in sowing on March and first two decades of April and there were very significantly higher than later sowing. The most sensible to late sowing was hybrid Velja, which had significantly less yield in sowing after 20th of April. For hybrid Krajisnik it was after May 1, and for hybrid Ducat after May 20. Late sowing reduced oil content also regularly. Differences in oil content between the first and May's sowing dates were 3.34, 2.88 and 2.14%, respectively for hybrids Velja, Dukat and Krajisnik. Generally, it may be concluded that sowing dates have great effect on yield and quality of sunflower. Earlyer sowing dates always are better, but for late sowing hybrids with short vegetation are better.
