In July 1998, in the region of Sumadia, Serbia (Yugoslavia) fire blight symptoms on hawthorn were noticed. The disease was observed in a field at the forest edge. The pathogen was isolated and determined as Erwinia amylovora on the basis of corresponding tests (oxidase negative, levan production positive, tobacco HR positive, imature fruit tests positive and slide agglutination test with Erwinia amylovora antisera positive).
