Problems in exploitation of groundwaters in Novi Sad [Serbia, Yugoslavia]

Water supplying of Novi Sad is an example of regional water supply problem in the Vojvodina Province (Serbia, Yugoslavia) where the groundwater is in exploitation by different types of water wells. However, capacities of water wells are limited as well as their lasting period, which requires great maintenance cost. Water supplying of Novi Sad is organized by using a number of resources based on groundwater exploitation by water wells. Water wells are connected with pumping up systems for water treatment and distribution to city water supply network (95% needs - 300,000 users). In different phases of the city development water supply problem has been solved by building "public" wells (subartesian and artesian type), mini water supply system for industrial purposes. In time when the city water supply system was built (beginning of 1959), existing water wells were abandoned without preventive water resources protection from quality degradation, using liquidation methods or repairing useful water wells. For water supply needs the city is relied on public resources with unique system of water treatment and distribution without reserve resources for unexpected conditions. Possibility of Novi Sad water supplying system development lies on exploitation of water in shallow and deeper groundwater bodies by wells in different parts of the river Danube bank and unique center for water treatment and distribution. The problem of water supply in unexpected conditions could be solved by existing wells reactivation and by building new public wells using water from deeper parts of "Basic" aquifer.
