The influence of desiccation on seed yield and quality in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.)

In order to investigate the influence of desiccation on yield and quality of soybean seed, a field trial was conducted. Test material was the variety Indiana, mg II, treated with the herbicides Reglon, Basta-15 and Harvade 25 F. Treatments were done at different levels of seed moisture: 60%, 50%, 40% and 30%. The experiment included also a manual two-phase harvest, without desiccant treatment, and at the same levels of seed moisture. Seed yield level depended on the time of desiccation, desiccant itself, and prevailing weather conditions. Performance of the desiccants was under strong influence of weather conditions at maturity. The best effect of desiccation was achieved by desiccant application at seed moisture of 40%, because it made the shortest period between application and harvest, and the harvest was three to six days earlier compared with non-treated variant. The manual two-phase harvest was unfavourable for all investigated traits, and it is not recommended as an adequate method for accelerating soybean maturation. The desiccants Harvade and Reglone exhibited similar effects on the investigated traits. However, they were less effective than Basta, especially regarding the traits associated with soybean seed quality.
