The Lower Casamance country (Southern Senegal). A phytogeographical synthesis | La Basse Casamance (Senegal meridional). Une synthese phytogeographique
1999
Berghen, C. vanden
A critical examination ot the chorological spectra ot the vegetation units distinguished in the Lower Casamance Country (Senegal) leads to the following conclusions : 1) vegetation units which are recognized in non-forested areas subjected to excessive ecological factors, have a relative uniform floristical composition in the whole territory. Their floristical composition also shows an important participation of either a local floristical element (the coastal-guinean one), or the Sudanian element, or the elements composed of species with a very large geographical distribution. 2) The chorological structure of the forest vegetation varies on the contrary along two gradients : the first N-S (Sudanian to Guinean vegetation), the second W-E (Sudanian or Guinean to Sudanian vegetation). As a conclusion, the limits of the chorological territories in the Lower Casamance Country are redrawn.
