The availability of sewage sludge derived cadmium and nickel by crops planted on soils of different types

The effect of sewage sludge application on nine soils of different properties was investigated in pot experiment and the availability of Cd and Ni in sludge treated soils released by 0.01 mol/l CaCl2 as well as the accumulation of both elements in spinach, oat and maize was evaluated. The application of sludge significantly increased biomass yield of all growing crops. The lowest yield effect was found at Fluvisols, significantly higher at Luvisols and Chernozems and fluctuated at Cambisols. The elements showed different accumulation potential and extractability affected by crop and tested soil. Higher yield at sludge treatments mainly reduced Cd and Ni content in plants. Highest differences of Cd were found in spinach biomass mostly at Fluvisols and Cambisols. The oat and maize showed lower sludge effect. Content of Ni in plants showed lower differences between sludge and control treatments, only mean content of Ni in sludge treatments was higher than at control ones. Element recovery from applied sludge was affected by soil properties and plant species. Highest Cd uptake was determined by spinach at Cambisols (10 %) and was reduced at other soils and by other two crops. Recovery of Ni was lower than Cd up to 3.3 % by oat. Uptake of Ni by spinach and maize was lower and showed similar pattern as in the case of Cd. Increment of Cd extractability was less affected by sludge application than Ni one.
