Research on growth characteristics of the poplar cv. Robusta (Populus x euroamericana cv. Robusta) under different cultural treatments on uninundated alluvia of the Uh river

Research on the growth and volume production of poplar cv. Robusta was carried out on a 25-year series of research plots Pavlovce on Uh; the series consists of two subplots. Poplar plants on subplot I were set out at a 2.5x2.5m spacing and conventional cultural treatments were used while the spacing of 4x4 m and intensive cultural treatments were used on subplot II. The research plot is situated on medium-heavy uninundated alluvia of the Uh river, in the lowland area called Vychodoslovenska nizina (Eastern Slovakia), where the sites were negatively influenced by water-management measures. The results of evaluation document positive effects of intensive cultural treatments on height and diameter growth as well as on volume production of this poplar cultivar. The mean diameter of poplar cv. Robusta increased by 16.9 % while total volume production increased by 8.1 %. It has also been demonstrated that poplar stands can prosper in the given on-site conditions, mainly if intensive treatments are used.
