The article summarizes the history, structure, research activities and projects of the Research Institute of Fish Culture and Hydrobiology, located at Vodnany in South Bohemia. The institute, founded in 1921, is divided into 3 research departments: Fish Genetics and Breeding, Aquaculture and Hydrobiology, Water Toxicology and Fish Diseases. It has 41 ha of ponds and employs 44 persons. The main research projects concern biological and technological aspects of fresh water aquaculture and interactions between risk factors in water environment and ecosystems.
