Biomonitoring of selected components of the River Elbe ecosystem - results of the period 1993-96-99

Selected aquatic components of the Elbe ecosystem were monitored in three-year periods on seven profiles representing the longitudinal profile of the Czech stretch of Elbe: fish fauna (biomass, species diversity, contamination of signal species - perch and bream - by mercury), phytoplankton (development of biomass in the longitudinal profile in one situation during the summer peak of biomass), macrozoobenthos (species diversity and contamination of signal species by mercury, lead and cadmium), sediments (large scale of metals and organic pollutents), biofilms formed on artificial substrata and the mollusc Dreissena polymorpha exposed in the river. The methodology used is in compliance with that of EU Water Framework Directive. The response of Elbe ecosystem corresponds to the general decrease in discharge of pollutants, though it is slow and not very consistent. The system of monitoring used nowadays is more sensitive than classic water quality monitoring and clearly shows specific points of pollution. Factors like species diversity are more dependent on the morphological state of the river channel (loss of natural habitats) than on the pollution.
