[Evaluation of milk production in ewes]

We have evaluated milk production, milk composition and lactation duration in three lines of Improved Valachian breed in one elite herd in the Slovak Republic. Between 1996 and 1999, we have recorded 647 lactations, 232 of them were in the Englishman line, 173 in the Bartindale line and 242 in the Bird line. The records were recalculated for the 3rd lactation. The milk yield ranged from 80.82 to 141.87 kg. We have recorded considerable increase of the milk yield in the last two years. The amount of milk fat ranged from 6.08 kg to 10.2 kg, the quantity of milk proteins varied from 4.46 to 8.07 kg and the production of lactose ranged between 3.89 to 6.97 kg. The lactation length varied from 112.62 to 171.06 days.
