[Nervous diseases in ruminants in connection with their nutrition]
2001
Hlasny, J. (Vyzkumny Ustav pro Chov Skotu, Rapotin (Czech Republic))
The article summarizes the main nutritional disorders causing diseases affecting the nervous system in domestic ruminants. The animals can suffer from hypomagnesemia, hyperammonemia, hepatic encephalopathy and grass staggers. The hypomagnesemia and hyperammonemia occur when the animals are fed higly fertilized forage. The blood ammonia concentration increases also with chronic or acute liver insuficiencies. The concentrations at which ammonia becomes neurotoxic appear to be rather variable. Acute ammonia intoxication results in encephalopathy. Mostly staggers are caused by ingestion of forages that contain tremorgenic mycotoxins.
