Proposals for increasing the biodiversity of Morava river ecosystem

The text summarizes the 1996-1999 results of the partial task "The Present State and the Improving of Water Ecosystems" pertaining to the Morava River Project. On the basis of an extensive research and assessment of the Morava River ecosystem, the article is aimed, in the framework of the ecosystem`s revitalization, at wetland biotopes (dead arms and cut-off meanders). In a number of cases, a linkage with the maternal water body is proposed (improvement of water regime, natural reproduction of river fish species). This is exemplified by the arms M26 and M28, for which the Morava River Board has already worked out a particular proposal for a linkage with the river. In terms of fish migration, within the work on the task it has been ascertained that 12 of the 36 weires on the River Morava do not impede the passage of fish, while for the remaining weirs preliminary proposals have been elaborated to overcome them by ecological bypasses, and the like.
