Nitrogen in the forest soils of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids Mts.

The forest ecosystems in the mountain region of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids are loaded with acid industrial air pollution for several recent tens of years. The increased soil acidification hinders the release of mineral nutrients from the organic humus matter into the soil solution and thus does not allow their proper utilization by the forest stands. The soils of the forest ecosystems in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids Mts. with the Norway spruce monocultures of the second generation are well supplied with total nitrogen however, the offer of mineral nitrogen is absolutely insufficient. The soil nitrogen form prevailing during the growing season was ammonium nitrogen with the content of nitrates being also high and the presence of nitrites found only sporadically. The forest ecosystems of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids Mts. can be generally classifed as N-limited. The thinning of the Norway spruce stands by 500 individuals per hectare and the liming had no significant influence on the soil nitrogen dynamics.
