The effect of haymaking technology and anhydrous ammonia addition on the content of linolenic acid, lipids, crude protein and netto energy in alfalfa hay

In a semi-operation trial, the influence of current feed harvest and anhydrous ammonia added to alfalfa hay on the linolenic acid (Csub(18:3)), lipids, crude protein, and netto energy content was studied during the hay drying up and storage. The addition of ammonia to the hay stored before drying up caused a higher reduction (P0.05) of Csub(l8:3) content. The factor of storage duration led to the decrease of Csub(18:3) content. Linolenic acid constituted 1.20-2.73 % of fat proportion in the control variant. Anhydrous ammonia used have caused a significant reduction in the linolenic acid content and also significantly different decrease of the Csub(18:3) content occurred in the ammonia treated hay. At the end of storage period, the difference between both variants was non-significant. In the fat content, statistically significant differences between both groups were found. The ammonia treated hay contained by 9.86 % less lipid than the control hay. The energy content in control and treated hay were comparable.
