Conventional way of ploughing is expensive and labourconsuming. In the world practice attempts have been made to replace plowing by subsurface cultivation, chisel plowing as well as by reduced depth of ploughing. Since 1983 Department of Soil Management of Latvia University of Agriculture has been engaged in research to study: feasibility of replacing 0.22-0.24 m deep plowing by 0.10-0.12 m deep stubble-field cultivation in the succession of 1 to 3 years in 6-field grain crop rotation; agro-physical changes going on in the soil; There were not observed important changes in topsoil (0-0.2 m) bulk density within the period of studies. The dependence of grain yields on soil clods (0.05m) was low. The results of researchshow that a single ploughing was recommended in cereal - grass crop rotation
