Effect of restriction of root development on growth and calcium content of chervil leaves

The objective of the research was to examine the effect of the root growth restriction by limiting root volume on the level of tipburn and calcium uptake in the chervil. The plants were grown in rock wool cubes of different sizes: a) 4x4x4cm=64 cm (3), b) 4x2.8x2.8cm=31 cm (3), c) 4x5.8x5.8cm= 135 cm (3). The nutrient solution had the electrical conductivity (EC) of 2 mS cm (-1). One drip emitter was placed in each rock wool cube. Growing chervil plants in cubes, which had limited root development, caused the inhibition of fresh weight. Reduction of root volume increased of tipburned leaves on plants. The incidence of tipburned leaves decreased linearly by increasing the size of cubes according to the mathematical equation of y=-1.35x + 4.5. The restriction of root volume reduced Ca content in young and old leaves. Optimal size of rock wool cubes in the present investigation was 135 cm (3). The plants in those cubes were almost free of injury, had the highest fresh weight and Ca content in leaves
