This paper gives an analysis of the factors affecting the calcium and phosphorus content of grass feeds, and presents the average dry matter, crude ash, Ca and P content of 2,161 samples of silage and hay investigated in the chemistry laboratory of the Department of Nutrition of the Institute of Animal Science. The results of the chemical analyses indicated that the crude ash and Ca content of silage and hay has decreased in recent years. Remarkably low average crude ash and Ca content was observed in the samples of field hay - 5.14 per cent and 5.24 g/kg in dry matter, respectively, being by 37 per cent and 36 per cent lower than the respective average data in the Feed Composition Tables
