Plant protection problems in commercial growing of elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.) in Hungary

In summer 1998 the authors began to conduct a survey of pests imposing highest risk to yield safety of elderberry, the crop recently involved in Hungarian fruit growing.During the study of bearing orchards planted with cv.Haschberg at Vác and Hatvan, it was concluded that among the pests, high number of individuals of Hyphangria cunea D.Aphis sambuci L. and of certain mite species were present and caused considerable damages.Leaf spots caused by Cercospora depazoides S.and yield loss due to Botrytis cinerea P.were significant.The species Heyda nubiferana H.and Xiphinema vuittenezi L. not reported in the literature were observed in the studied elderberry orchards.During weed surveys conducted in spring and autumn weed populations similar to other orchards were found.
