Effects of fusariotoxins on the health and reproduction of pigs
1999
Rafai,P.
Of the secondary metabolites of microscopic fungi, the mycotoxins of the Fusarium genera have decisive importance in Hungarian animal husbandry.Feeding of zearalenon contamined feeds to gilts and multiparous sows leads to severe infertility. The toxin hinders the ovarian function, viz., the egg mortality rate in the follicles increases and, in spite of the visible signs of oestrus, ovulation is either reduced or does not take place at all.Eggs ovulated against the toxic effect fail to embed in the uterinal mucosa.T-2 toxin and other trichothecenes also depress the ovarian function.Due to their cytotoxic effect, the size of the womb and ovaries decrease and female pigs fail to cycle.
