Heterogeny of the population of Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria strains isolated from different parts of Hungary was verified. Presence of races 0 and 3 were not discovered until known. We have established that the hypersensitive tissue necrosis itself was not sufficient for the determination of resistant/tolerant character of pepper lines to the bacterium but only together with the knowledge of bacterial multiplication in the plant tissue. Differences between pepper and tomato isolates were found by serological methods
